Reliable power distribution relies on precise and easy-to-install connections. Airshrink and CiP are the proud distributors of Melec’s range of quality torque shear lugs (ATSL) and connectors (ATSC), which consistently deliver on precision and ease of installation. Our torque shears are thus ideal choices for low- (LV) and medium voltage (MV) installations and are important components within CIP's range of LV and MV cable joints and terminations.
What Are Torque Shear Lugs and Connectors?
Torque shear lugs (ATSL & ATSLC) are used to connect terminations (air insulated and screened type) to bushings, busbars, and other electrical terminals while ATSCs are used in cable joints to create secure, permanent conductor connections. Instead of crimping and deforming the lug or connector with the conductor when using cumbersome and expensive crimping equipment, torque shear lugs and connectors only compress the conductor, meaning fewer sharp edges to worry about, which can lead to partial discharge (PD) on MV applications. When tightening the bolts on a torque shear system, and the bolt reaches the specified tension, it shears off automatically, ensuring a consistent and secure connection every time.
CiP recommends using torque shear lugs and connectors in our medium voltage and low voltage cable joints and terminations, to ensure that your cable conductors are securely connected to each other and your electrical network.
Key Benefits
No special tools are required. Installation needs only standard socket wrenches or spanners, with no costly crimping tools, dies or specialised equipment needed.
Consistent, foolproof installation. Shear bolt technology removes guesswork. When the bolt breaks away, the correct torque is achieved and cannot be loosened.
Built for harsh conditions. The solid barrel design prevents moisture ingress, while the grooved inner surface increases contact points for reliable performance, both indoors and outdoors.
Wide cable compatibility is suitable for aluminium and copper conductors. On our low-voltage torque shears, sizing is available from 1.5 mm² to 240 mm² with the MV range starting at 25 mm² to 1000 mm².
Anti-oxidising paste is included in each barrel to assist with aluminium conductor applications.
Typical Applications
- CiP MV cable joints and terminations.
- CiP LV cable joints and terminations.
- Power distribution panels, main feeders, and branch circuits.
- Switchgear installations, cabinets, and control panels.
- Outdoor electrical systems, pole-mounted transformers, street lighting, and substations.
- Industrial environments, MCCs, distribution boards, and heavy machinery.
- Infrastructure projects, buildings, factories and utility networks
The Bottom Line
Airshrink and CIP's torque shear lugs and connectors simplify installations while delivering dependable performance. Manufactured to international standards (IEC 61238-1 Class A, BS EN 50483-6), they meet industry requirements and the exacting demands of installers.
For contractors and engineers who value speed, consistency and reliability, no special training, no expensive tools, just secure connections that last.
